My plan for Saturday brunch with the fam was to get my wife to pick something. She picked Truckstop in Pacific Beach.
It’s a big place and it wasn’t too full, just a few parties of young people doing bottomless mimosas. It was more crowded outside. We tried sitting out there, but on a cold morning with a view of the ocean, it was too cold. We moved inside, under to roof, but it was open to the air, and it was still too cold.
Third time was the charm. The waitress was super cool in helping us move again to a big interior booth that felt alright. Country music was playing kind of loud. We didn’t love that at first, but it was fine.
We were brought a few free cinnamon donut holes to start. That was a nice touch.
My son was starving and was worried about ordering the birria tacos because he’s had experiences where tacos didn’t fill him up. They ended up being plenty, and he loved them, I tried a bite and they were very good, in a meaty, greasy, piggy kind of way.
My wife got the club sandwich. It was huge and came with waffle fries and ranch. She wanted a pancake on the side. That wasn’t on the menu but they said they could do it.
I ordered the Hippie Hash and—inspired by my wife—got a pancake on the side. The hash was huge and really good. I used to get Hippie Hash in Ann Arbor at the Fleetwood Diner. This was different. I think it was bigger and crunchier.
Our “side” pancakes were dinner plate sized and thick. One of these cakes was enough as a full breakfast.
The service was great. When my order came with thick sourdough bread, I asked for some butter, expecting a packet or two. They brought me a metal cup full of butter. They do big portions, don’t skimp, price lowish, and make you feel at home.
I can even say, some of those country songs were actually good. I found myself sorta humming them later on. We had leftovers and all enjoyed the meal.
I think the bill was about $70 before tip.
