From Breakfast Burritos to Brandt’s Cormorants: A Morning at La Jolla Cove

I was going to go do my swimming laps Thursday morning but I needed some food beforehand. I was gonna just stop by Mickey D’s for my standard #2 Breakfast meal with coffee, but I thought, “Nah. I really should do a little better and check out that little cafe in front of La Jolla Cove that my family will never set foot in.”

So I started heading to Goldfish Point Cafe and then thought better of going by myself. Why not invite the wife. She’ll probably go with me. The son is the one who acts like there is nothing there for him.

So my wife and I arrived and lo and behold, they were closed. Google said they open at 10am, but it was now almost 10:30. Ugh. So much for giving them a try. They really don’t look that good, but I have this thing where I like to try every weird little place, and this one is in a very scenic locale.

My wife was pretty hungry and wanted something from somewhere. Given our new financial circumstances (TMI?) we ruled out most of the really great food options in the area.

The closest alternative was Brockton Villa Restaurant, which we tried once before. My wife recalls not being impressed with her omelet.

We stared at the menu outside debating what we could split to save money. We settled on the breakfast burrito. Not high on my list, but that’s what we agreed on, and sometimes they can be very good. We tacked on the fruit bowl.

The view was fantastic, overlooking the Cove. The service was very friendly and helpful. The server chatted us up on a more personal level and helped us to decide on something to split. She actually recommended the breakfast tacos which was higher on my list, but for my wife’s hunger concerns we thought the burrito might be better. I would probably appreciate a benny.

I feel guilty trashing food at a restaurant when I think I personally ordered badly, but the burrito was pretty lame. I was hoping for more black beans. It was mushy with rice and avocado and not that filling. The fruit bowl was different, but kind of weird with too much pineapple.

I think the moral of the story is don’t try to order cheap in a tourist location. I will not call it a tourist trap, as I think Brockton is better than a tourist trap.

Everyone was enthralled with the view. I overheard other patrons going on about it. I took photos of open water swimmers as I waited for our food. They amaze me. I swim a lot in a pool. I am inspired but scared to join the La Jolla Open Water swimming club.

I also tried to zoom in on birds skimming the surface and cool waves.

Heading back to the car—parked free on Coast Blvd—I got some better photos of wildlife, particularly the “Dr. Seusian” large seabirds known as Brandt’s Comorants. BTW, the reason I know they are called Brandt’s Comorants is because my iPhone is spying on my pictures, and is now telling me what kind of bird I just snapped. Cool, but also creepy. I wonder if I really want AI analyzing all my photos. I wonder if I can turn it off.

As we passed our original destination—Goldfish Point Cafe—we noticed that it was now open. Oh well. I am sure I really preferred the view from Brockton.
