Min Sok Chon: A Delicious Discovery on Convoy Street

Last Saturday night, my family and I ventured over to Convoy Street in San Diego—a vibrant, food-filled neighborhood known for its energetic night vibes and variety of Asian cuisine. We were in the mood for something new, so I asked my wife to cruise around, just seeing what caught our eye.

We got lucky with a parking spot in front of Min Sok Chon, a cool Korean spot we hadn’t tried before. There was an all you can eat grill and a cafe right there as well. They all looked good enough to try. At Min Sok Chon it was early enough to get a table without a wait which felt like a small win in itself.

The booth was big, the ambiance was lively with great music, and the decorative wooden cages around us were inspired. The service was fantastic. Banchan (those little side dishes) arrived quickly.

My son, who’s in high school, ordered the hot stone bibimbap. If you’ve never had it, the sizzling stone bowl adds a whole other layer of excitement as it crisps the rice and keeps everything hot. We also shared some giant potstickers—easily some of the best I’ve had—along with a round of almond fire chicken wings. I probably would have ordered the mango habanero, but at spicy level 2, that wasn’t appropriate to share with my wife. The wings were a hit, but they were messy as hell.

My wife really wanted the corn cheese, and I was impressed. Way better than average. It was big, hot and very cheesy. I was also happy to have a solid draft IPA. That’s not something every Asian joint does well.

The service was excellent—friendly, attentive, and quick. Push the service button and they arrive with your check and (apparently by mind-reading) a box for your left-over wings. By this time, there was a line outside and a bustling vibe.

We like to try new places all of the time and we never have enough time/money/appetite to try everything, so we are picky about wanting to go back to a particular place. That said, we all agreed that we’d like to go back.
