Tonight we got sandwiches at The Butchery at the lively One Paseo complex in Del Mar. That’s pretty much what they serve in the store—sandwiches and fries. I guess they have a salad. I would’ve been interested in soup.
The Butchery is an upscale butcher shop. I got a fabulous ribeye and chicken in a bag of lemon pepper there once. They were both fantastic, but not cheap. My wife was impressed with their spices.

This was our second time there. I was expecting it to be dead at around 6pm, but it had a decent liveliness. They close at 6:30. The upscale Nick’s next door was and always is happening.
Tonight, I got the burger, my son did the double smash burger and my wife got the house sandwich. Everything was served with hot thick-cut fries. My son recalls doing the same double smash last time. My wife thinks she got the Pastrami last time.
We all tacked on drinks, and I ending up switching out my apple juice (kinda small) for a $4.99 bottled water. My son liked his root beer—a little cheaper—and my wife enjoyed her tea.
That said, I have a pet peeve with this style of drink choice. Nothing is really all that good or even all that cold. It just feels like a rip-off to pay like 11 bucks for kind’a lame drink choices.

I suspect this will be controversial in some circles, but can’t I just have a fountain soda on ice?
All right. I’m being nitpicky now. The prices were actually reasonable for decent hot sandwiches—and that smash burger—mmmmm.
We all liked our food, but the standout was the double-smash burger. My son called it “pretty solid” and then said that he had forgotten how good their double smash burger is.

I had a bite of it, and it was hot and juicy—really good. My burger was quite good, but his was much better. My burger had nice looking lettuce and a green tomato. It also had some kind of cheesy sauce or something.
My wife really liked her steak sandwich, but we all agreed the double-smash was the best and the house sandwich came in second.
Even with three drinks our bill didn’t even come to $63. BTW—I wish I had noticed the nice-looking free water—we could’a got out under $60.
I do have to the mention the music though. It was pretty cheesy.
The worst was that 70s 10cc song “The Things We Do for Love.” The rest of the songs weren’t very good either, except for exactly one decent song, a Tom Petty number.
I can’t remember which one though. All I can remember is the 10cc song, which is killing my brain right now.
I will go back for that double-smash burger and the free water. Oh —and some butchered things. Let’s hope they change the playlist.
The Butchery has locations in Costa Mesa, Crystal Cove, and Del Mar
