Delica Japanese Deli: Small Spot, Big Flavors

I found myself in San Francisco for a work event this past week. While I was there, I met up with a friend at the Ferry Building for lunch. Our first lunch spot choice was a new place my friend had heard about called “Lunette Cambodia”. Unfortunately, they were closed on Monday and we found that our second choice of “Terrane” closed at 2pm (it was 2:30). The third time was the charm with “Delica Japanese Deli” who was open and looked enticing.

They have a la carte items like donburi, soup and sushi. My friend recommended the 3-item combination. For the three items, you can choose between main, salad, rice and soup. I went with #4 which included 1 salad, 1 main and rice for $12.50.

For my main, I chose some delicious looking chicken dumplings and my salad was a spinach salad. The salad consisted of cooked spinach tossed in a soy sauce dressing with ground white sesame. I also added a potato croquette.

Everything tasted wonderful. The rice was cooked perfectly and the chicken dumplings were dense and flavorful with a little cilantro sprinkled on top. Usually salads are not that memorable but I could not stop eating the spinach salad. I finished that before eating anything else.

Since my friend and I were chatting throughout our lunch, I didn’t finish the potato croquette. It wasn’t anything special, but it was good enough for a potato croquette.

Overall, I’d come back again and get the combo. Next time I might try the pork cutlet or sweet and spicy chicken as my main. There were other intriguing salads like Wasabi garlic potato or green bean salad. It’s an easy spot and the prices were quite reasonable.
