Went back to Convoy, a favorite of mine. I got my family to look through a new food page I like Restaurants — Convoy District
I got them to quickly scroll through the 93 or so delicious looking pictures representing new restaurants in the Convoy District.
My son said it was overwhelming. My wife picked Karami Ramen, and Tofu House as a backup plan.
Turned out, we didn’t need the backup plan. We got a spot right in the parking lot at Sunrise Towne Centre, and we were quickly seated.

The interior is cozy and fun. The colorful Japanese art and decorations elevate the experience, as does the upbeat Asian music they play. My Shazam app identified “Like Summer Time” by Ryokuoushoku Shakai and “Eureka” by Gen Hoshino.
My wife and son both got the Miso Tonkotsu Ramen, I was tempted by the spicy—4 chilis level—Aka Oni, but I had to try their mildly spiced signature bowl, the Karami.
But first we had to have Karaage (から揚げ).
I actually sort of fought with my son over the appetizer. I wanted something different, but I gave in to his constant desire for chicken nuggets in this glorified form.
But I was wrong. This karaage was piping hot and delicious. We were enthralled.

Our Ramen’s came together, as is ideal. The service was good.
The ramen was good but my son was disappointed. He has a hell of an appetite, and he is used to more meat and noodles. He said unapprovingly “It’s mostly vegetables.”
My wife agreed that it was on the lighter side.
I liked the signature ramen, but none of the ramen was as hot as I like. I also immediately wished I had gone with something spicier.

But with good, friendly service, I was bold enough to ask for something to spice it up. Our server brought me chili paste and chili oil.
OMG, that chili paste was just the trick. The oil was pretty great as well, but that paste was perfect.
The other thing that hit me pretty strong was the amazingly fragrant flavor of the purple bamboo shoots. Wow. Loved it.
Our bill was under $65.
It was a fun meal.
Walking back to our car, I noticed the large packed dining room at Woomiok. Karami was nice, but Woomiok looked like the more festive choice.
