A couple of days ago my phone did something cool, but it kinda freaked me out a little to.
At La Jolla Cove I took a picture of a sea bird. When I looked at the photo in the Photos App, there was a little suggestion in there for me to “Look up Brant’s Cormorant.”
I didn’t know what the hell that meant, but there was a tiny little bird icon next to the suggestion. Wait. Did my phone just identify the bird I snapped?
When I clicked on the suggestion, it tried to take me to something that I didn’t feel like dealing with. There were icons I didn’t fully understand—a pawprint, a musical note, a book, a photo, a leaf and one I can’t even figure out, like a folded card or something.
Below the icons was the text “Look Up finds results about the content of your photo from the web, the App Store, nearby locations, and more. You can adjust this in Settings. Learn more…”
Like I said, I didn’t feel like dealing with whatever this was, but I was intrigued enough to search for “Brandt’s Cormorant” myself in Google. Sure enough, that was my bird.
I told my wife about this and later, while she happened to be updating her iPhone to iOS 18.3 she noticed something about Apple Intelligence identifying plants and animals in your photos.
Oh. I think that paw print and that leaf icons were trying to tell me that.
