My wife son and I went and saw Sinners.
I heard a lot of hype and saw that it was 98% on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and 97% on their Popcornometer and figured it must be pretty awesome. I heard people on TV talking about how great a movie it was as well.
On Common Sense Media it was recommended for ages 16+ and warned about excessive gore and three sex scenes. My son is a little on the young side, but it was the gore that concerned me the most.
He really doesn’t like gore. My wife and I can handle it, but prefer to not have to. I read something about squirting blood. Yuck.
It turned out that the gore wasn’t too terrible for us, though my son did literally look away at certain moments when he was sure there was about to be blood.
The funny thing is there actually wasn’t any blood at those moments.
We all enjoyed the movie, but we all thought it was overrated. It was a fun diversion, but not as amazing and we had expected.
Having read some stuff after the fact, it is clear that we missed some of the details and themes. We also missed the final scene after the credits.
My son appreciated the acting and the cinematography. I was proud that he would even notice such a thing. Marvel movies are more his jam. He was intrigued by the trailer for the Thunderbirds movie.
I was also glad that my son appreciated the scene with the musical spirits from different times. It was a cool scene.
I was happy that my son had a bunch of questions and comments about the movie. It was worth some family discussion. It served it’s purpose.
There are a lot of interesting characters, and I guess there are some deep themes, but ultimately it struck me as a weird movie. I like weird, but I really wanted this to go somewhere deeper.
