Spicy Shashuka Sunrise Skillet at Sugar & Scribe

Last Saturday we did brunch at Sugar and Scribe.

My son and wife didn’t want to go to Snooze or Cody’s, so I did some searching online. I saw that lajollamom.com had some brunch recommendations I respected, like her “local favorites.”

She picked The Cottage La Jolla and Sugar and Scribe.

Now I knew The Cottage was pretty awesome, as I had written about it:
The Cottage in La Jolla: A Delightful Coastal Brunch Experience

So I was definitely game to try Sugar and Scribe.

We managed to park for free right at Fay & Kline, but there was a half hour wait at 10:15 so we walked around La Jolla a bit. They don’t take reservations and there is a sign asking that you not stand in the high-traffic area.

The atmosphere was really nice, with cool music playing—Neverender by Justice & Tame Impala—setting the vibe. The place was lavishly decorated, exuding elegance at every turn. Even the silverware and napkin had me feeling like some kind of fancy dude.

The service was fantastic as well. Seasoned professionals for sure.

My son and I got Mango Lemonades. I liked mine, but my son thought it was too sour. My wife said her iced tea was nothing special.

Irish Sausage Rolls with berry chutney and scrambled eggs at Sugar & Scribe

I was tempted by the Guiness Beef Stew, or the Pozole, but I had to go with their new dish—Spicy Shashuka Sunrise Skillet.

It looked amazing but was only good. The toast was thick and pretty nice for being as plain as it was. I resisted the urge to ask for butter. I realized that I should just put some spicy shashuka on it. That made me feel fancy, cuz fancy people eat healthy.

I had no problem finishing it. That also made me feel fancy. No need to schlep a carryout box home.

My wife wanted to order adventurously and decided to try the Irish Sausage Rolls—a special. Sometimes specials can disappoint. Sometimes they can just be a way to get rid of extra ingredients.

The Lobby Roll at Sugar & Scribe

This might have been one of those times, I’m not sure. But it was basically two “Pigs in a blanket” elevated with some kind of berry chutney. It came with two eggs. She found it boring.

Suffice to say, it’s possible to order something that won’t amaze you as much as the bathroom décor—which was amazing BTW.

But the scene was lovely, and looking at other people’s food, I could tell there are a lot of great things to order at Sugar & Scribe. I will definitely go back. I want to order some of that other stuff—and they have a bakery.

My son ordered a winner, the Lobby Roll. He loved it. It looked great. He said it was better than our (former)favorite lobster roll, the SD Roll at Duff’s Doggz in the Home Depot parking lot in Rancho Bernardo.

The price was about the same as well.

Oh yeah, and the potatoes were truly amazing. They made me question all the other fried potatoes I’ve eaten in my long life.

How could nobody else have discovered whatever trick these guys used to make the world’s best fried potato slices?

I’m actually getting hungry right now.
