The Melt

The "Del MAr" decoration at the Del Mar location of The Melt

We did a fast casual dinner at The Melt. I think I’ve been there like three times now. There’s a location in La Jolla, by the Whole Foods. That location has a lot of college vibe.

This time we went to the location in the Del Mar Highlands Towne Center, a pretty vibrant spot in its own right. We frequent the Sky Deck and some of the other spots here on occasion.

On my first visit to The Melt—in La Jolla—my son and I got the Double Cheeseburger. I remember thinking it was an amazingly indulgent, greasy beast of a burger—think Five Guys.

The second time I went with a friend and tried a weird little egg sandwich called Egg-in-a-Hole. I had hopes that it would be as good as the Bird-in-a-Nest I learned to make in 7th grade cooking class. It wasn’t.

This time my son and I went for the double cheeseburger again. My wife got a grilled cheese with tomato soup.

Having remembered the burger as being served hot with melted cheese and grease running over my hands, over-the-top and delicious—I was disappointed.

It just didn’t strike me as all that good this time. I sorta think it wasn’t served as hot and melty. But that aside, I think I probably had lower expectations for a burger at a cheese joint on my first visit.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Five Guys, but I gotta believe that is the more crazy-good grease burger. Overall, I try not to eat like that.

The grilled cheese was served with croutons and a dill pickle spear. It was pretty good. The tomato bisque was pretty damn good though. As long as it is hot and creamy, it usually is.
